It is interesting to remember that sampling is a basic part of people's lives. You cannot imagine a mother who eats everything she cooks to be sure that the meal is good tasting. Instead, she tastes a small spoonful and makes a judgement about the entire meal. An even better example is when a husband tries a small bit of food and pronounces an entire meal as hopeless. Each of these individuals is using a part (sample) of the t6tal to generalize to the total.
