Cotton varieties developed from the variety Allen (Gossypium hirsutum) have been successful in several African countries (Innes and Jones, 1972). The present commercial varieties of Uganda, BPA and SATU (Arnold, Costelloe and Church, 1968), both stem from Albar 51 which was selected from Nigerian Allen. To preserve genetic variability, seed stocks of various Allen accessions are maintained at Namulonge. These accessions have been screened for characters of economic importance.
