The 4th assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change CIpCC, 7007) indicates that the warming of the climate system is unequivocal and observations shows an increase in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level. Climate change is likely to have major impacts on poor livestock keepers and on the ecosystems goods and services on which they depend of which 80% of Kenya consists of arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). These changes will occur over the same period during which Africa's population is projected to grow from 0.9 billion people in 2005 to nearly 2 billion by 2050 (UNDP, 2007). Many livestock keepers in Africa are facing a highly volatile situation characterized by rapid climate changes. The impacts of climate change on the vulnerability livelihoods of resource-poor livestock keepers need to be better understood, so that adaptation to climate variability as well as to the risks associated with longer-term climate change can be determined and appropriate mitigation measures taken (Ongwae, 1., et aI2005).
