Item Control Roadside Erosion Using Vetiver Grass(Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, 2017) Ondicho, A.R. ; Mwangi, T.J.K. ; Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research OrganizationRoadside erosion is the detachment of soil particles from along the road embankments, transportation and deposition of the particles along the embankments, on farms, in water bodies or on other land surfaces. Roadside erosion is caused mainly by storm water from hilltops, steep slopes, and hard surfaces such as roof tops, as well as runoff from roads, quarries, and construction sites.Item Grow Bananas for Improved Livelihoods and Environmental Conservation(Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, 2017) Onyango, M.A.; Mwangi, T.K.; Ondicho, A.R.; Ojowi, M.O.; Kidula, N.L.; Magenya, O.E.V.; Shiluli, M.C.; Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research OrganizationBanana is a source of food, livelihoods, andemployment for many rural and peri-urbanhouseholds. Banana may be used as food and fodder as wellas for handicraft. The large leaves of banana form a canopy thatprotects the soil against erosion. Bananas can be inter cropped with a variety ofcrops without suppressing yields. Banana plants may be used to control runoffwhen grown along contours of sloping land. Bananas may be used as ornamental plants.Item Gully Rehabilitation for Increased Food Production(Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, 2017) Ondicho, A.R.; Mwangi, T.J.; Magenya, O.E.V.; Makini, F.W.; Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research OrganizationA gulley is a landform created by running water, eroding sharply into soil, typically on a hillside. Gullies resemble large ditches or small valleys, but vary in depth and width from less than ametre to a kilometre. When a gulley is forming, the water flow ratecan be substantial. It is this substantial flow ratethat results in a deep cutting action into the soil. Gullies usually occur in areas with excess runoff and concentration of water. They are also associated with destruction of vegetation cover.
