Item East African Agriculture and Forestry Research Organization, Muguga, Kenya(1954) pereira, H.C.In comparison with the resources devoted to chemical studies of soil nutrients, remarkably little field and laboratory time has been devoted to soil moisture studies in East Africa. Water supplies are, however, the limiting factor in much of the agricultural and forestry development, and also of the industrial expansion, in these territories; a knowledge of the water use by field’s crops, pastures, tea or coffee plantations, forest plantations and indigenous vegetation is essential to efficient land-use planning. Many of the techniques of soil physics are comparatively recent, and have been developed in temperate climates and soil conditions. In this paper techniques found suitable to East African conditions, as experienced by the author over the past eight years, are briefly discussed.Item Soil phsicist East Africa Agriculture & Forestry Research Organisation(1947) pereira, H.C.The planning of land use for all forms of development in East and Central Africa is dominated by the need for efficient exploitation of the limited rainfall this applies both"' to the vast semi-arid areas, where techniques for "'- conservation and economic use of r3.infall are critical for the survival of agriculture, and to the restricted high altitude catchment areas, whose management may seriously affect the volume _md the reliability of both river flow and underground water supplies a basic necessity for efficient land-use planning is a knowledge of the water use of indigenous vegetation and of the various economic alternatives offered by agriculture and forestry crops .
