Item KARI EU Phase II NARP II Final Report October 1996(Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, 1996) Kenya Agricultural Research InstituteThe EU has financially and technically supported research and training programmes under NARP since 1988. In addition, a major component consisted of the funding of construction of offices, laboratories and houses as well as the provision of equipment. The EU support to NARP I was evaluated in early 1994. The evaluation mission recommended that, having laid the foundation for improved research planning and implementation, the EU support be continued, but with a greater focus on user-oriented research, integration of socio-economic aspects and gender issues into research planning and Implementation and the strengthening of linkages between farmers, extension workers and researchers. Furthermore, the emphasis of research should be on arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL). The present Support Programme reflects this approach, which is in concert with the multidisciplinary Farming System Approach (FSA) for planning and implementation of research activities, developed under NARP I and now adopted by KARl.
