Indigenous plants, particularly leafy ones, play an essential part in providing vitally needed protein ,to rural communities in developing countries in the tropics. A !Widerange of local plants are commonly used, both in semi-arid regions !Where food becomes scarce during the dry season, and in the wet tropics where animal protein is almost invariably in short supply (vanl Epenhuijsen,1974; Martin and R,uberte, 1975 and Terra,1966).
