Abstract

The purpose of evaluating lands for surface irrigation is to try to classify the lands into arable and non-arable and to indicate for the arable ones into how far the limitations restrict the kind of crop that is expected to be grown. Climatic conditions of Wamumu area do not satisfy the water requirements for optimum growth of maize under rainfed conditions hence the requirement to evaluate the area for irrigated maize production. The land utilization type discussed in this paper can be defined as irrigated maize crop production on small holdings (about 2 ha), high capital investment, labour intensive (after project implementation) with medium.level technology. Social and human resources and marketing facilities are considered to be optimum.
