Until recently the distribution of Glossina morsitans sllbmorsitalls Newst. in West Africa appeared to be static in comparison with that of G. 11lorsitans morsitans Westw. In various parts of East Africa, of which several large-scale advances have been recorded. Nash (1948) and Buxton (1955) reported that extensive survey work had revealed Oldy slight movements in Northern Nigeria, and it was suggested that more extensive movements were unlikely because of the extreme climatic conditions and the low population density. Mulligan (1952), however, reported the beginning of a large-scale advance of the Zaria-Kaduna tsetse belt, and Davies (1964) and MacLennan (1963) later reported the continued extension of the belt in several directions at the rate of at least 10 miles per year.en
