Abstract

Kenya's agricultural research system is being restructured. A new Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) will have soil and water management research as one of its highest priorities. This report sets out a proposed framework for a "National Soil and Water Management Research Programme" for KARI, specified a number of projects which are scientifically valid and are of high priority in the Kenyan context, and identifies donor interest in the support of the parts. Finally, it recommends three donor projects for Swedish (SIDA) funding. The aim of the consultancy is to identify how Sweden can assist in implementing proposed research in soil and water management considering Kenya's policy on soil conservation and SIDA's strategy for rural development. This report is just such a set of research proposals for the "National Soil and Water Management Research Programme", written in close collaboration with the new National Programme Coordinator, A.M. Kilewe, and representing a realistic number of projects that are potentially fundable by donors.
