During an epidemic of Hemileia vastatrix in July-Nov. 1972 when an oil based formulation of pyracarbolid was applied at 0.6% at 3-weekly intervals, evidence was obtained that the fungicide accelerates abscission of infected leaves and prevents the occurrence of new infections. On treated trees abnormal and 'pitted' leaf rust lesions developed from infections which occurred before spraying began. Lesions in the remaining treatments were normal.en
