Abstract

Plans are now being considered for the reorganization of agricultural research in East Africa, and it is intended that there should be better co-ordination of the work in the territories concerned, as well as a closer link with research stations in the United Kingdom. The scientific isolation of research workers in the tropics has been a serious handicap in the past, and although personal contacts with workers in other countries were easy to make and to maintain, lack of official support prevented full use being made of the willingness of individuals to collaborate. It is therefore of particular interest at the present time to recall an example of cooperation between a colonial government and a research institute in the United Kingdom.
