The Kenyan smallholder dairy sector contributes to over 80 % of the total milk supply and involves at least 300,000 small-scale farming households. Improvement in technical and productive efficiency of the system are essential if the Kenyan Government's target for increased milk supply during the next decade are to be met. An effective dairy cattle research capability is a pre-requisite for the successful generation and uptake of improved production methods by mallholder dairy farmers.en
