For many years, the Kenya agricultural research system was characterized by duplication of research programmes which led to wasteful use of resources. Concerted efforts were, therefore, made in the mid 1980s to rationalize the system. An initial step towards this rationalization was the merging of the former East African Agricultural and Forestry Research Organisation (EAAFRO) at Muguga, the Scientific Research Division (SRD) and the Veterinary Research Division (VRD) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development into the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI).en
