Mel W, a water-soluble analogue of melarsoprol, gave promising initial results in the treatment of T. gambiense sleeping sickness. These authors considered Mel W to be less toxic than melarsoprol and since it could also be given by intramuscular (1M) injection, it was thought to have distinct advantages. This paper presents the results of the treatment with Mel W in 17 cases of T. rhodesiense meningo-encephalitis. Large doses of Mel W were tried in a patient (Case No. 261) infected with a melarsoprol-resistant strain of T. rhodesiense.en
