National Agricultural Research Project Consultancy Report

Abstract

The main objective of my consultation in Kenya was to examine existing and potential linkages between research activities of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARl)and extension services provided through the Ministry Of Livestock Development. Although I had four years experience in Kenya in the 1970's at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, I found that things had changed since my residence years. I was dealing with government agencies with which I was not familiar, and my tenure on this occasion was a bit short to really do justice to the entire scope of research-extension linkages. Therefore, I felt more comfortable with a focused approach on research-extension linkages with emphasis on animal health and production rather than on the total scope of agriculture. I also feel more qualified to comment on interrelationships between research and extension at the "working" levels rather than on organizational structures within and between ministries.
