Soil fertility is an important factor in maize production. Maize performs best on well drained, aerated, deep, warm loamy soils containing abundant organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Genes for higher yields in maize and other crops and plants can reach maximum expression only when the plant is grown on soils well supplied with balanced amounts of nutrients.en
