Abstract

In the Mbita Division, which is located in Western Kenya on the shores of Lake Victoria, the supply of drinking water constitutes a problem. The lake is at present the main water source for people living even as far as 10 km inland. Three boreholes which yield only I to 2 lis each form the only alternative supply during the dry season. There are no perennial streams in the area and even the Lambwe, the main river, only contains water during the rainy season. Data regarding its discharge are not available. Although a few springs are to be found along valley sites, yields are very low.
