The field work which started on 1st December 1976 was done in four phases. The first two phases were carried out Wema Irrigation Scheme in early December 1976 and late January 1977. A total of 106 augerhol.es and 15 profile pits were made and described; in ~addition 11 infiltration rate tests wore carried out. Eleven groundwater samples were collected for laboratory analysis (see appendix 5). A similar field work was carried out at Hewani irrigation scheme in two phases, in February and March 1977. 44 augerholes and 10 profile pits were made and described, and 1igroundwater sample was collected for laboratory analysis. lthough both schemes had been in operation (quite successfully) for same years, it was still deemed necessary to carry out a detailed soil survey, in view of the longterm operational planning and (futuro and present) construction works.
