The West Usambaras present agricultural and administrative problems which are fundamentally concerned with the properties of soils. It is the pedologist's sphere to study these and offer what advice he can on the use of land. The present study, which was primarily to investigate ways of easing the pressure of native population on the plateau of West Usambara, deals first, in some detail, with an area of outlying country thought to be capable of native settlement, and then reviews the position in the West Usambaras as a whole.en
