Abstract
The Crop Protection Programme Review took place one year after the start of the Programme in April 1995. At this time all project management, monitoring procedures, organizational structures and communication systems should be well established and the technical programme well in hand. To a large extent most of these programme components were found to be well established, in accordance with stated aims and outputs for this point in the three year programme. The adaptive research programme at the three centres is underway and the teams are clearly enthusiastic, well-motivated and have made great efforts to adopt the techniques of on-farm research. Links with extension services are in most cases very good. However, efforts need to be made to strengthen these scientist-extension-farmer links and move towards greater levels of on-farm socioeconomic monitoring and extension staff participation. The technical programme has justifiably tended to emphasise the current KARl pest control recommendations, however, in the next two years the research would be better directed towards farmer designed and farmer managed trials.
