Abstract

The Helopeltis bug. Helopeltis begrothi, has been known in Tanganyika tor many years. Morstatt6 recorded it as a pest of cinchona cacao cotton and camphor but not as of any importance. Since 1922 it has been collected at in~ tervals on cotton in various parts of the Territory but never in numbers. In 1931 it appeared on tea in Tukuyu.1 In 1935 a number of cases of injury to cotton were reported particularly in the Morogoro and Usambara districts and Helopeltis bug was kept under observation as a minor pest.2 During 1936 Helopeltis has appeared as a serious pest of a number of plants other than cotton and the attention of nurserymen and gardeners generally is now drawn to the bug.
