It is perhaps appropriate that after nearly ten years' close association with the editorship of this Journal I should, on my departure, record some of the ideas that have guided me and some of the things that it has taught me. I do not write from an altogether one sided point of view, because I have had a good deal of my own writing published in scientific journals. There is nothing new in any of my cautions or recommendations, but it is certain that they need repeating. On some points I am pernickety: you are at liberty to ascribe the strength of my prejudices to senile obstinacy that seems like mellow wisdom to its possessor.en
