Comparison between Glossina morsitans, G. pallidipes and G. fuscipes as vectors of trypanosomes of the Trypanosoma congolense group:
Abstract
The present study was undertaken to compare Glossina morsitans Westw., G. pallidipes Aust. and G. fuscipes Newst. (Formerly referred to as G. palpalis fuscipes) a3 vectors of organisms of the Trypanosoma congolense g Oup (subgenus Nannomonas of Hoare, 1964). The object was both to investigate the susceptibility to infection of the three species and to apply the infectivity titration technique of Lumsden et al. (I 963b) to blood pools remaining after individual flies have fed, in order to determine the number of infective trypanosomes extruded while feeding. Results are also included from two G. morsitans from successive meals taken at a time when no comparison had been made with other species.
