Abstract
Prior to 1960 dairy industries in most developing countries played a minor role in the overall agricultural development plan due to the poor milk yields of Bas indiCils cattle (Galukande and Mahadevan, 1962; Mahadevan, 1965). It was also considered that exotic dairy cattle were of limited value in tropical countries because of inadequate disease control measures, climatic stress and a sub-standard plane of nutrition (Pfob, 1953; French, 1955: Rollinson, 1962). However in the last decade many developing countries have improved their disease control measures and have started to build up their dairy industries. This has been done for both nutritional and economic reasons (Nsubuga, 1970).
