A catenary sequence of soils developed from granite in the subtropical Mumias area of Western Kenya is described with particular reference to their contrasting texture and clay composition. The complex relationships between these soils is stressed: this complexity mainly derives from the prolonged but localized influences of soil creep and lateral eluviation. The distribution and general character of associated outcrops of palaeolaterite (plinthite) is outlined, and the chronology and mode of laterite formation is discussed. Evidence is advanced for the contemporary development of laterite on relatively level sites affected by acid and ferruginous ground waters.en
