It has a total length of about 290 kIn, stretching from 01 Doinyo Sabuk ( .... hills) in NE direction to the Galana valley of Tsavo. The plateau owes its existence to a flow of course porphyritic phonolite forming a resistant capping to basement system, which it directly overlies.
