Abstract

Melarsoprol was found to be effective in the treatment of T. gambiense meningo-encephalitis later its value was demonstrated in patients with tryparsamide-resistant T. gambiense infections as well as in those with T. rhodesiense meningo-encephalitis who were always incurable before the advent of melarsoprol. Earlier trials with melarsoprol emphasized its toxicity and there was a high mortality (more than 10 per cent.) associated with its use.
