Abstract

Br(;!eders have identified new gerrnplasm ",.. developed new Rop_uLations fo_r_ J(p~rticular agro- 7 ecological zone. Through on-station testing and evaluation by farmers, a number of yarieties } h~ve been r~ained for ~ fanu testing. ~ecent1y, a partiCUlar d~sig!l called "Mother-Baby Trial L/ / Design" has become popular for use in variety ~'y_aluation b yj'~~ers~ It_ w<!s i!~~~ lop~d by I CRISAr~ ~s..e.a:::extensivel -.b¥-CIMMYI-ZimbilP~e. The trial is designed to evaftiate new varietie s at the last stages of the selection process, and can contain 10 to 20 or more new vanetIes. The design combines a researcher-managed central trial called "Mother trial", containing all the new varieties, with farmer managed satellite tria!s, called "Baby trials", each containing,a u~ique subset of the vari~tie
