Item Growth, Mortality, and Recruitment in the Rabbitfishes Siganus Sutor (Valenciennes, 1835) And S/Ganus Argenteus (Quoy And Gaimard, 1825) In The Western Indian Ocean(1988) de Souza, T.F.; Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMRI)About 100 species of fishes are caught and marketed by Kenya marine artisanal fishermen. Most of these species are associated with reefs, adjacent shallow water environments and the immediate slope beyond the reef. They are exploited by cast nest, gill nets, beach seines, handlines and traps. Of these, rabbitfishes (of which 4 species have been identified in the Indian Ocean waters, viz Siganus Sutor (Valeciennes, 1835), S. argenteus (Quoy and Gaimard, 1825), S. stellatus (Forsskal, 1775), and S. corallinus (Valenciennes, 1835) provide the basis for one of the most productive artsanal fisheries, accounting for 20% of the demersal catch (Anon, 1978). The majority (31%) are caught by traps (Carrara and Coppola, 1985).
