Item How to Graft Cashew-Nut Seedlings(Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization, 2017) Katama, C.K.; Mwinga, W.; Pole, F.N.; Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research OrganizationCashew nut has previously been propagated in Kenya through seed. KALRO has introduced propagation through grafting to ensure crop uniformity and shorten time to maturity. The technique involves use of one month old rootstock which is grafted with improved cashew varieties using top-wedge grafting. Grafting on rootstocks older than one month do not succeed because of hardening of the rootstock cambium causing graft incompatibility. Grafting of young rootstocks produces seedlings ready for planting within 3 months.Item How to Make a Solar Dryer(Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, 2017) Pole, F.N.; Katama, C.K.; Mwakio, F.; Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research OrganizationA solar drier is a piece of equipment that uses the solar energy to dry products easily. It comprises of an air heating chamber (solar radiation collector) and the drying chamber (bin), which houses the product to be dried. The improved solar drier (Figure 1) was developed by KALRO-Mtwapa and ATDC-Mtwapa.Item Improving Storability of Sweet Potato for Food Security(Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, 2017) Ememwa, I.K.; Nungo, R.A.; Oyunga, M.O.; Cheboswony, R.J.; Katama, C.K.; Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research OrganizationOrange fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) varieties contain beta-carotene; a precursor of Vitamin A. Vitamin A helps in vision, skeletal formation and growth and gestation/placenta development. Solar drying of OFSP is emphasized as it protects OFSP from dust and pests and retains more beta-carotene. Most OFSP varieties have high water content. Processing OFSP into dried chips helps reduce the water content thus improving shelf life and eases transportation. A solar drier can be constructed from locally available materials. Where a solar drier is not available, drying under shade is encouraged to protect OFSP from direct sunlight which destroys beta-carotene.Item Kukausha Maembe Ili Kuboresha Lishe(Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, 2017) Pole, F.N.; Katama, C.K.; Mwakio, F.; Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research OrganizationMahali pa kufanyia kazi: pawe pakubwa ili kutosha kuweka vifaa vyote vihitajikavyo.Item Mango Drying for Nutrition Security(Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, 2017) Pole, F.N.; Katama, C.K.; Mwakio, F.; Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research OrganizationA well dried product peels off the trays easily. Store your products in a black container and put in a dry place. Make sure the containers are tightly closed. Sort product (grade and pack according to the likes of the customer).
