Item Detailed Soil Survey of Waitiki’s Farm (Gatundu Division, Kiambu District)(Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, 1994) Kimotho, P.W.; Kenya Agricultural Research InstituteThis detailed soil survey was carried out at the request of the owner of the farm Brigadier Waitiki. The soil survey was executed from 16th-21st August, 1993 by the author and Messrs: H.N. Onyono and CN. Kariuki. The farm comprises of approximately 51/2 hectares. The purpose of the soil survey was to characterize the soils and evaluate their suitability for various uses. The farm lies in a tea growing area and at the time of the survey half of the farm was under tea plantation while the rest was either under Napier grass, grassland paddocks where cattle and sheep were grazing. Bench terraces had been constructed in few places near the homestead to prevent soil erosion.Item Semi-detailed soil survey of poorly drained areas in Uasin Gishu District. During the rainy season these soils are too wet (in the 'rainy seasonal for arable farming and have been set aside for grazing purposes. However I due to increased demand for arable land, attention is now focused on these poorly drained soils. The objective of the survey was to carry out soil investigations on approximately 327 hectares of land and to assess the soils suitability for rain fed arable crops (e.g. maize, wheat and beans) growing. Fieldwork was done between and 24th June and 8th July, 2002. The authors are grateful to the Director KARI, Director NARL, the Head KSS and Engineer M. Mukwana for facilitating the soil mapping and to Engineer J.K. Talamu for the support rendered when carrying out the fieldwork. Acknowledgement is also extended to the other staff of Eldoret International Airport who in one way or the other made the survey work successful. The Agricultural extension staff of Kapsaret Division (Uasin Gishu District) assisted in supplying information on the important arable crops in the area.
