Item Irrigation Suitability of The Soils and Waters of the Floodplain of the Kerio River North East of Lokori (Turkana District) 1974(Kenya Agriculture Research Institute, 1974) Ministry of Agriculture ; Vleeshouwer, J.J.; Michieka, D.O.; Ministry of AgricultureAt the request of Dr. Anderson, of the Lokori Station of the African Inland Mission, a site evaluation was carried out from 16th to 18th January. 1974 of the soils and water conditions of an area North East of Lokori. The data gathered should give an idea of the feasibility for irrigated Agriculture in the floodplain of the Kerio River.Item A Preliminary Investigation of the Finger millet Growing Area of Kelelwa Farm Kabarak, Nakuru District, 1980(Ministry of Agriculture, 1980) Michieka, D.O.; Ministry of AgricultureThis site evaluation was carried out at the request of the Provincial Director of Agriculture (Nakuru.). The purpose was to visit the farm and advise on the soil conditions in the area where -finger millet (Eleusine corocana) is grown, investigate the cause of the failure of this crop and collect soil samples for laboratory analysis. The site evaluation of the area was conducted on 28th June, 1980.Item A Preliminary Investigation of the Soils Selected for Upland Rice Production (Meru District), 1981(Scientific Research Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, 1981) Michieka, D.O.; Scientific Research Division of the Ministry of Agriculture; Scientific Research Division of the Ministry of AgricultureThis site evaluation was carried out at the request of the Director, Scientific Research Division of the Ministry of Agriculture. The purpose was to assess the soils and 1and ability for upland rice production in the flat and bottomland areas of Meru District. The actual fieldwork was carried out from 28th January to 6th February, 1981. It should be stressed that resent map is a provisional one, based mainly on aerial photography interpretation, existing site evaluations and some additional fieldwork. However, report and map may be used as a guide for more detailed studies in the future.Item The Soil and Land Suitability for Irrigation of Three Sites In the Upper-Tana Catchment Area (Kunati, Ishiara and Rubingazi; Eastern Province) 1978(Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, 1978) Michieka, D.O.; Siderius, W.; Kenya Agricultural Research Institute; Kenya Agricultural Research InstituteA request was received from Tana River development Authority (TRDA) through the Scientific Research Division of the ministry of agriculture to carry out a site evaluation of Giaki area as an extension of the proposed Kunati Irrigation Project. The area is situated approx. 30 km east of Meru Township of the northern limit of the Tana Basin. The site evaluation in the field of the area was carried out from 8th to 11th November, 1977. The site evaluation was undertaken in view of the plans to start agricultural development in the area. Such scheme would be mainly aiming at raising the living standards and general productivity of this remote and poor area by irrigated agriculture and crop processing within the scope of improved infrastructure, particularly dorestic water supply, improved road communications and harnessing a small-scale hydroelectric resources (see the preliminary feasibility study of Kunati Irrigation Project by TTDA, 1978). The field investigation was carried out making use of aerial photographs, geological maps and topographic maps of the area sc as to arrive to the present preliminary soil map of approx. scale 1:50,000. It should be stressed however that the present mapping is a provisional one, based mainly on aerial photograph interpretation and a few field profile and augering observations. Due to the limited time, the site evaluation concentrated on the volcanic plain area. Less attention was given to soils of the Hills and Mountains.Item Soils and Vegetation of the Kiboko Range Research Station 1977(Ministry of Agriculture, 1977) Ministry of Agriculture; Van der Pouw, B.J.A.; Michieka, D.O.; Ministry of AgricultureThe report on the soil survey of the Kiboko Range Research Station is the first on the Kenya Soil Survey semi-detailed soil survey reports to be printed and the soil map as well as vegetation map reproduced in colour. The report identifies the environmental conditions of soils and its immediate aurmdings with the aim to aid objective experiments in range management.Item Soils of the Kwale-Mombasa-Lungalunga Area (quarter degree sheets 200,201 and 202) 1978(Ministry of Agriculture, 1978) Ministry of Agriculture; Michieka, D.O.; van der Pouw, B.J.A.; Vleeshouwer, J. J.; Ministry of AgricultureThe present soil survey is the third in a series of "Reconnaissance Soil Surveys" with multi-purpose land evaluiltiot1 per topographic map sheet. This particular soil survey covers three degree map sheets, namely the Kwale, Mombasa and Lungalunga sheets, sheet no. 200,n 201 and 202 respectively. The soil maps are presented at scale 1:100,000. It is shown in this report that the general pattern of the soil resources is mainly determined by the kind of bedrock and climate. Most of the soils have very sandy topsoils, show high infiltration rates and are resistant to erosion. Because of these sandy topsoils and the low organic matter content these soils have low fertility. The report gives an example description of the methods employed and a comprehensive account of the possible land use alternatives considered for the area. However, it should be noted taht some of the methods applied are liable to be improved as more experience is being gathered and the needs of the users of the map and data become better known.
