Item KARI-Copy of Project Proposal on Combating Desertification Using Nuclear Technology 2005(Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, 2005) Sijali, I.V.; Kenya Agricultural Research InstituteTo study the effects of tied-ridges on water conservation (soil water storage) aiming to develop suitable and dependable integrated rainwater harvesting and nutrient management options that can be used by the farming community for cowpea and maize intercropping systems in the Kenyan arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) to improve and sustain crop production. To popularize, through on-farm demonstration trials, the use of biofertilizers in order to sustain seed production and improve soil nitrogen fertility in smallholder farming systems.Item Stakeholders Consultative Meeting on Sustainable Land Management Project Workshop(Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, 2005) Kenya Agricultural Research Institute; Gicheru, P.T.; Gachimbi, L.N.; Nyangw'ara, M.K.; Lekasi, J.; Sijali, I.V.The stakeholders agreed that the following factors are the causes of land degradation in Taita Hills catchment operational (catchment) area are: Deforestation of the catchment for cultivation Overgrazing in lowlands Continuous cultivation in the same piece of land and inadequate application of soil amendments. Cultivation on steep slopes and associated high runoff during the rains causing a lot of gully erosion in the lowlands. It was noted that all actors do not practice sustainable land management in the catchment. The objectives of the project were discussed and found to address the issues of sustainable land management holistically. In each objective, the requirements, concrete steps and support/action by who were identified, discussed and agreed upon. The stakeholders identified available and lacking of technologies. Researchable issues and the promising ones were discussed and agreed upon. The institutions to upscale which type of technology were also identified during the meeting. This report details the results of a two days workshop
