Abstract

The effects of S-31183, Pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone mimic, were measured on a population of the tsetse fly, Glossina pallirlipes, for more than a year, from October 1991 to November 1992. Pyriproxyfen has been shown to sterilize adult female flies that make contact with it and males can transfer sterilizing doses to females during mating . The method of delivery was to place a small conical cloth device treated with pyriproxyfen dissolved in an oil, on the open top of an odour-baited trap such as those used routinely to capture tsetse flies in Kenya. Flies entering the trap were contaminated with pyriproxyfen as they escaped from the top of the trap.
