A Review of the Kenya Soil Survey Project 1974

Abstract

1.1. Under an agreement for Technical Cooperation between the Kenya Government and the Netherlands Government, a Soil Survey Project was approved and a schedule of operations draam up, effective from 1st January, 1972. The Project and the schedule were dated 25th June, 1972. 1.2. Under Clause 3.2 of the Schedule of Operations it was agreed that the Schedule should be reviewed and if necessary revised after two years from the start of the Project. 1.3. Accordingly, a Review Mission was set up, which consisted of - Dr. A.M. Kabaara, Coffee Research Foundation, Chairman Mr. J.K. Gitau, Ministry of Agriculture H/Q Ir. R.P.H.P. van der Schans, Netherlands Soil Survey Institute, and spent some two and a half weeks from 14th May to 30th May in this work. 1.4. The terns of reference were: 1) To investigate the orientation of the technical work of the soil survey project, 2) To review the progress made in the implementation of the technical work, 3) To investigate the coordination of soil survey work in the Ministry of Agriculture and its relation to other soils investigations, with special reference to national priorities of agricultural development and land use. 4) To investigate the progress made so far under (2), including the training of Kenyan officers, 5) To assess the adequacy of the Netherlands contribution, 6) To assess the availability of Kenyan funds and their adequacy for achieving the set goals, 7) To review the Schedule of Operations.
