dc.description.abstract | In Kenya, the Larger Grain Borer (LGB), Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae), was first reported from Taveta (Coast province) in 1983 (Muhihu & Kibata 1985) where it was causing extensive damage to maize and cassava. This introduction was almost certainly the result of a spread from Tanzania where it was accidentally introduced in the early 1980s (Hodges 1986). A recent survey within Kenya has shown that the insect has now spread northwards and westwards into Eastern province and threatens maize growing areas around Nairobi and in the west. The area of origin of the LGB is central America, where it occurs as a minor pest of stored grain (Hodges 1986). | en |
