Item UON-MSC Thesis-Some Aspects of Water Relations and Dry Matter Production of Coffee-E.M.Akunda 1980(University of Nairobi, 1980) Akunda, E. M.Field and greenhouse studies were carried out to understand some aspects of water relations and dry matter production in Coffe3 Arabica L. Leaf water potential was found to be the most suitable technique for expressing internal water balance. The leaf water ~potential at which important plant processes start getting limited was found to be -20 bar. It has therefore been suggested that this is the time when coffee should be irrigated. The technique of monitoring irrigation based on Yl was made simple by correlating it with the time taken for cobalt chloride paper disks to change from blue to pink when attached to the leaf at the time when trees experience maximum diurnal stress i.e. between 13.00 and 14.00 h. fit the critical water potential (i.e. -20 bar) the time recorded for this colour change was found to be approximately 5 minutes. It has been suggested that this is the time when coffee trees should be irrigation.
