Item South African Grassland Investigations-II(1940) Ball,R.S; A.I.C.T.A., Kenya ColonyAt the University Farm, Pretoria, experiments have been carried out on the management of fertilized veldt pasture, and results of considerable interest have teen obtained. The only drawback is that the whole experimental area was fertilized with mineral fertilizers, so that the effects on the veldt in the absence of fertilizer are not to be seen. It has been shown that uncontrolled grazing allows the earlier and finer grasses to be excessively defoliated and the coarse species such as Cymbopogon to run to seed. Thus it is difficult to control the composition of the herbage by grazing alone, since the coarser and more unpalatable species will tend to increase at the expense of the finer grasses. For these reasons, fire and the use of the mower are resorted to for the destruction of this unpalatable herbage, whose seeding is in this manner arrested.
