Item Artificial breeding of tsetse fly(1968) Fraga De, J.A; Ana, M.D.S5-SUMMARY Different experiments have been made in order to breed in artificial conditions the Glossina morsitans that has been maintained in the Laboratory as self-suporting colony since 1959. Two aspects were particularly considered: the feeding membrane and the blood meals. As feeding membranes were experimented the skin of several animals but this method was not followed on account ofthe dIfficulty to prepare a such membrane. which duration was very short. The fibrin membrane proved to be much easier to prepare and to be bitten easily by the tsetse fly, but the agar membrane. yet easier to prepare, offer the same advantages As blood was used mainly defibrinated blood. but the best results were obtained when glucidolytic, Iipidolytic and proteolytic enzimes were added. With this improvement the longevity of the flies increased till a maximum of 79 days and same females laid normal larvae. which pupae produced normal adults.
