Item Food consumption and nutritional status of settled and semi settled Gabra women aged 15-49 years in Kalacha location, Marsabit, Kenya(Adongo Amos O, 2009) Adongo, A.O.Frequent droughts experienced by pastoralists in the recent times have had a devastating effect on livestock population. This has led to increased food insecurity and consequently sedentarization in urban centers. While sedentarization provides amenities such as health facilities, education among others, problems of malnutrition among women have been observed in Marsabit District. The objective of this study was to evaluate food consumption and nutritional status among settled and semi-settled non-pregnant Gabra women aged 15-49 years. The research was a cross-sectional survey in design using semi-structured questionnaire. Two hundred and twenty four (224) women aged 15-49 years were randomly interviewed in Kalacha Location. Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and 24 - Hour Dietary Recall were used to evaluate dietary intake levels. Maternal weight, height, Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) was measured and Body Mass Index (8MI) calculated to evaluate maternal nutritional status. Blood samples were collected and Haemoglobin concentration (Hb) tested by use of Haemocue™. Whole blood was applied directly to a filter paper, dried, and later analyzed for transferritin receptor (TfR) using ELISA kit (TF-94; Ramco) whereas C-reactive protein (CRP) and Alphal-acid glycoprotein (AGP) were further analyzed using enzyme immunoassay method in the laboratory.
