The chitin of the proboscis of G. brevipalpis is very translucent, and pressure applied to the cover-slip over the salivary gland preparation suffices to splay the labrum from the combined labium and hypopharynx, as well as to flatten out the practically transparent lateral walls of the labial gutter (Jobling, 1933). This procedure enables trypanosome colonies in the proboscis to be detected easily; but the method is rough, and it is possible that some light infections, especially at the base of the labrum, were overlooked.
