Kenya is presently acknowledged as the world leader in population growth rate. Consequently, the traditionally rich agricultural lands with high rainfall, but which are less than 15% of the nation's area, have for some time been overcrowded. The result is a fast-moving process of expansion of smallholder crop farming into ever drier historical grazing areas.
