Item 4th International Soil classification Workshop. Rwanda 2nd -12th June 1981(Kenya Soil Survey, 1981) Muchena, F.N.; Sombroek, W.G.; Kenya Soil SurveyThe report covers Oxisols which cover only a minor part of Kenyan land surface. They occur on a variety of physiographic positions and are developed on a variety of parent materials. They are also found in varying present-day climates. on plateaus, gently dissected older peneplains ("uplands") and non-dissected erosional plains.Item Comparison of Data from Four Soil Laboratories on Three Haplustox/ Rhodic Ferralsol Profiles of the Kindaruma Area - Kenya.(1977) Sombroek, W.G.To be able to compare the laboratory methods of NAL-KSS in Nairobi with some well-known soils laboratories elsewhere. Samples of three similar Ferralsol profiles in and around the Kindaruma area were analyzed at either: (a) The national soils laboratory of Brasil. With its abundance of Ferralitic soils (IQA-Rio de Janeiro - request of KSS) (b) The soils laboratory of the University of Hawaii - USAID Benchmark soils Project (their request). (c) The soils laboratory of the IITA in Ibadan. Nigeria (their request)Item Ministry of Agriculture- National Agricultural Research Laboratories-Kenya Soil Survey Legend Exploratory Soil Map 1978(Ministry of Agriculture, 1978) Sombroek, W.G.; Ministry of AgricultureThis legend is a first uncorrected draft based on a hand written draft of the author.Item A Preliminary Evaluation of the Irrigation Suitability of The Soils In Mandera Ramu Area NO. 10 1973(Ministry of Agriculture, 1973) Sombroek, W.G.; Braun, H.M.H.; Kibe, J.M.At the request of the Land and Farm Management Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, a site evaluation of the soil and water conditions of the Daua valley in Mandera District was carried out, from 6th to 13th of April 1973. Special attention was to be given to an area just downstream of Mandera town, an area halfway between Mandera and Ramu (Hareri), and one at Ramu town of beyond (Dimtu). These areas are under consideration for irrigated agriculture under the Ministry’s programme of development of minor irrigation schemes. More specifically, they should serve for the settling of the groups of destitute in the area, now living largely in famine relief camps. The data gathered should help the Ministry of Agriculture to assess preliminarily the feasibility of the proposed schemes.Item A preliminary evaluation of the soil conditions on the East Bank of lower Tana (Bura East area) for large scale irrigation development. MOA-NAL-Kenya Soil Survey NO.P21 1975 HM(Ministry of Agriculture, 1975) Sombroek, W.G.; Mbuvi, J.P.; Leyder, B.A.; Ministry of Agriculture; Kenya Soil SurveyIn the request of the Tana River Development Authority, a site evaluation was carried out to determine the irrigation potential of the East bank of the Lower Tana River (Bura-East area’). The request was made in view of the proposal to start a major irrigation scheme in the area, as a complementary to the Bura (West) scheme of 14,000 ha, which is already in an advanced stage of planning.Item A site evaluation of the irrigation suitability of the soils and the waters of the Merti Area Isiolo District No.7 1973(Ministry of Agriculture, 1973) Sombroek, W.G.; Vleeshouwer, J.J.; Wokabi, S.M.; Ministry of AgricultureAt the request of Mr. R. Storer, Project Manager of the FAO/FFHC Project for development of minor irrigation schemes, Nakuru, a site evaluation was carried out (4 - 7th December 1972) of the soils and water conditions of the proposed Merti irrigation scheme. The data gathered should help the Ministry of Agriculture and FAO to assess preliminary the feasibility of the scheme, whereupon external funds for its execution may be obtained.Item Soil Conditions of the Marafa - Magarini Area, Kilifi District: A Preliminary Assessment(Kenya Agricutural Research Institute, 1976) van de Weg, R.F.; Sombroek, W.G.; Kenya Agricutural Research Institute; Kenya Agricutural Research InstituteAt the request of the Ministry of Lands and Settlement, in view of a soil-conservation orientated pilot project for settlement scheme improvement, to be financed and executed in cooperation with the Australian Development Assistance Agency, at the evaluation of the area was carried out on 17th and 18th of April 1976 in the Marafa-Nagarini area, N.W. of Malindi township. The data gathered should help the Ministry and the A.D.A.A. in the plan..'1ing of the proposed project. No soil data of the area existed; therefore with the help of aerial photographs on scale 1:50.000, e preliminary soil map of the area was prepared. It should be stressed however the present mapping is a provisional one, based mainly on aerial photograph interpretation and a few field observations (augerings, profile pits, road cuts) and laboratory data. Due to the limited time available, the site evaluation concentrated on the coastal plain and the uplands; the alluvial plain of the Sabald river was surveyed earlier (1975) by the Minor Irrigation Development Special Task Force of the Kenya Soil Survey. Use could be made of their field and analytical data on the alluvial soils. These results of their site evaluation will be published in the near future in more detail (Bonarius, in prep.) Execution of a project a envisaged should however be preceded by a proper semi-detailed soil survey, together with a topographical survey.Item Syllabus of graduate lectures Internal document not for reference or publication(Kenya Soil Survey, 1971) Dr. Buringh, P.; Sombroek, W.G.; Kenya Soil SurveyThis is the second edition of lecture notes on Ferrallitic and Plinthitic soils .The first edition was made in 1968 by the first author. They have been revised and complemented by the second author when he took over lecturing on this subject for the graduates in tropical soil science because of the appointment of Dr. Buringh to conrector and later-on to president of the Agricultural University. For more details students are referred to the original publications, available in the library of the Soils Department. The lectures have been illustrated by a great many colour slides of soil profiles and land types from many tropical countries. An album of selected colour photographs can be studied in the library.
